DOOR to ASIA is a Designers-in-Residence Program organized by Tumugiya and the Japan Foundation, where designers from Asian countries gather in a community for a period of time to create "communication design" for the local companies. DOOR to ASIA is currently in its third year and has since redesigned many Japanese towns, cities and local companies, together with outstanding designers from various countries in Asia.

This summer in August, DOOR to ASIA will take place in the Sanriku coastal towns of the Tohoku region, that was terribly affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. Six years after the disaster, local companies are still reeling in the aftermath of the economic impacts as they struggle to return to normal business. This is understandable, considering how the consumer population in Japan is rapidly declining due to depopulation and aging population. On the other hand, the middle class population is expanding in other parts of Asia. This presents these local companies with an opportunity to reach out to these potential customers, albeit with the right method of communication and design.

Through DOOR to ASIA, these designers will stay in the towns with their assigned local companies where the locals will share their experiences, values, stories and more, and based on this input, the designers will spend three full days to suggest a brand new design that refreshes the images of these local companies, and portrays them with the right image to the potential Asian markets out there.

Last year, we had designers from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, who were assigned to a local fish processing company, the tourism department of Rikuzen Takata city, rapeseed oil company and a Japanese sake company. The designers produced novel ideas that surprised everyone and injected fresh perspectives to these companies and regions.

We are currently looking for two interpreter- coordinators (English - Japanese) who are willing to take up this challenge to be the connecting bridge between these designers and Japan. Accommodation, meals and transportation will be covered completely.
